Calculating Your Total Streaming Bandwidth Need
Add up the bandwidth requirements of every device likely to be active at peak times. Two 4K IPTV streams require 50β60 Mbps. Three HD streams add another 30β45 Mbps. Two gaming devices contribute relatively little during gameplay but spike significantly during game downloads. A household with these devices actively streaming simultaneously needs a sustained internet connection of 100 Mbps or higher to maintain quality across all devices. Most standard fibre connections exceed this figure; ADSL and older cable connections may not.
When to Consider a Mesh Network
For larger homes where a single router cannot provide adequate signal to every room, a mesh Wi-Fi system β multiple access points communicating with each other to create a seamless network β is more effective than range extenders, which typically halve the available bandwidth for the extended segment.
